Chapter 1. Who we are.
"We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us." (1 Thessalonians 2:8, NIV)
The Granville Chapel is a new Reformed Presbyterian church. We transitioned from a mission church plant to a particularized church on May 23, 2010. Our story began in August of 2005 when ten families from the Granville and Newark areas began to meet together for the purpose of planting this new church. From the beginning, three common purposes emerged: to plant a church committed to Reformed worship and teaching, to live in community with one another under the unique authority of Scripture, and to live out the truth and compassion of the gospel in our communities. We hope to become a movement of the gospel of Jesus Christ that transforms the people of Granville and Newark through a work of the Holy Spirit, to plant churches in the Licking County area and to expand the Kingdom of God throughout the world through missions.
Reformed
We believe that the Protestant Reformation should have a profound impact on the way we function as a church. This results from our conviction that the Reformers, such as Martin Luther, freed the message of the gospel from the traditions of men in the church who emphasized "works" as the primary way to relate to God. The marks of the Reformation - Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone), Solus Christus (Christ Alone), Sola Gratia (Grace Alone), Sola Fide (Faith Alone), Soli Deo Gloria (To the Glory of God Alone) - have tremendous influence on our worship and teaching. Our beliefs are summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith.
Presbyterian
We believe that Presbyterianism is the best biblical expression of living in covenant with God. Presbyterian describes our form of church government and our polity. In Presbyterianism, the lowest court is the session, which is the local church; the sessions from the local churches in a specified geographical area form a Presbytery and all Presbyteries are accountable to the General Assembly on the national level. Therefore, it is truly a representative form of government. Our church belongs to the Presbyterian Church in America, a National denomination with historic roots in Biblical Christianity.
